European Council leaders have approved the nomination of Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission, Council president Herman van Rompuy announced on his official Twitter account.
Decision made. The European Council proposes Jean-Claude Juncker as the next President of the European Commission #EUCO
Juncker, the former prime minister of Luxembourg, was nominated at a summit on Friday despite strong objections from David Cameron.
The centre-right Juncker must now appear before the European Parliament and win a confirmation vote set for July 16 on his policy agenda.
