The nomination of Jean-Claude Juncker as the next European Commission President represents an "abject failure of leadership" for David Cameron, said Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander:

The outcome of today’s summit represents an abject failure of leadership for David Cameron.

David Cameron’s basic errors of statecraft and diplomacy have let Britain down.

His excuses will fool nobody, least of all his own backbenchers.

Defeat for David Cameron was not inevitable. Yet it was predictable. Because for the past four years he’s been burning bridges with our European allies when he should have been building alliances.
