Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said overtime costs had reached £3,198,847 in the first five months of 2014, compared to £1,500,905 in the same period last year.

A backlog of over 30,000 passport applications has forced the department to draft in more staff.

Home Secretary Theresa May apologised last month to people whose holiday plans had been disrupted by the long delays.
