Obama is due to meet with local officials and faith leaders during his trip, but White House officials said he will not be visiting the border during the trip, as he has been urged to do.

A number of anti-immigration demonstrations have been held in Texas and California in recent weeks.

Democratic congressman Henry Cuellar told Fox News he hoped Obama's decision not to visit the border would not become his "Katrina moment".
