Israel launches ground offensive in Gaza as air strikes continue

Israel has launched a ground offensive in Gaza with residents reporting heavy shelling in the area.

Palestinian health officials say 27 Palestinians, including a baby, two children and a 70-year-old woman, have been killed since Israel sent ground forces into the densely-populated strip of 1.8 million Palestinians.

Israel responds to Lebanese rockets with artillery

Israel's army responded to rockets shot from Lebanon with artillery fire, Lebanese security sources and the Israeli military statement said.

"Initial reports indicate that at least two rockets fired from Lebanon hit open areas north of Nahariya. No damage or injuries, thus far," an Israeli military statement said. They added that Israeli forces had fired artillery toward the source of the rocket fire.

A Lebanese security source said three rockets had been fired from Lebanon.
