Foreign nationals and Palestinians with dual nationality evacuated the Gaza Strip through the Erez crossing, after Israel's military warned northern residents of the Palestinian territory to evacuate their homes.
An Israeli military spokesman described the evacuation as a "short and temporary" campaign against northern Gaza, which is thought to begin sometime after 12.00am local time (9am).
A Palestinian man waiting to return to the US said: "We're leaving our relatives, our brothers and sisters in this horrible situation, but we have to do what we have to do".
It's been an emotionally exhausting day in Israel and Gaza as hopes for peace were raised then dashed then raised then dashed again.
In the court of international opinion, this is how Israel wins a battle and still manages to lose the war.
Until the Israelis and the Palestinians find a way of resolving the underlining conflict this will not be more than a pause.
