Israel has launched a ground offensive in Gaza with residents reporting heavy shelling in the area.

Palestinian health officials say 27 Palestinians, including a baby, two children and a 70-year-old woman, have been killed since Israel sent ground forces into the densely-populated strip of 1.8 million Palestinians.

Growing human cost as Gaza death toll rises

The death toll has climbed higher in Gaza after 18 more people were killed today, bringing the total to 160 people and making many more homeless.

Determined to stop the rockets by Hamas, Israel has been relentless in its attacks, with the Israeli prime minister warning that it could be a long campaign.
