An 85-year-old woman who was stabbed in her own home in an apparent attempted murder may have been sexually assaulted during the brutal attack.
The pensioner was left with life-threatening injuries after being attacked by a man shortly after her husband had left the couple's house in Edinburgh on Friday.
Police Scotland's Detective Chief Inspector Keith Hardie confirmed the victim is in a critical but stable condition in hospital and added: "She is also displaying injuries which may be consistent with some form of sexual attack."
DCI Hardie appealed for public help in hunting the attacker after a witness described seeing a man close to the property at around 3.30pm on Friday. He is said to be aged between 18 to 30, of average build with short dark hair.
