Former Attorney General Dominic Grieve has said he does not know why he was removed from his post during the reshuffle.
It has been suggested that Mr Grieve's position on reforming the UK's relationship with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) put him at odds with David Cameron.
He appeared to allude to the difficulty of dealing with the ECHR, saying: "The issue from a legal point of view is not there is a policy issue but there is a legal issue - what is lawful and legally possible may well be different from what in policy terms may be desired."
