Israel has launched a ground offensive in Gaza with residents reporting heavy shelling in the area.

Palestinian health officials say 27 Palestinians, including a baby, two children and a 70-year-old woman, have been killed since Israel sent ground forces into the densely-populated strip of 1.8 million Palestinians.

Israel to intensify offensive against Hamas in Gaza

Israel will intensify its week-old military offensive against Hamas in Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, after the militant group continued firing rockets at Israel, Reuters have reported.

"It would have been preferable to have solved this diplomatically, and this is what we tried to do when we accepted the Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire, but Hamas leaves us no choice but to expand and intensify the campaign against it," Mr Netanyahu said in broadcast remarks.
