Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has met Hamas political official Moussa Abu Marzouk in Cairo to discuss an Egyptian initiative to halt hostilities between Israel and the militant group.
The talks are seen as the first concrete sign that efforts to reach a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants were still active despite the collapse a day earlier of a proposed mutual "de-escalation" of violence.
It's been an emotionally exhausting day in Israel and Gaza as hopes for peace were raised then dashed then raised then dashed again.
In the court of international opinion, this is how Israel wins a battle and still manages to lose the war.
Until the Israelis and the Palestinians find a way of resolving the underlining conflict this will not be more than a pause.
