Woman, 73, bitten by police dog 'very poorly' in hospital

A 73-year-old woman has been bitten by a German Shepherd police dog that was searching her garden for a suspect. The pensioner is said to be "very poorly" in hospital after she suffered a number of bites to her body in the attack at 9.30pm yesterday at her home in Penrith Road, Middlesbrough.

Neighbour Ray Wood, 67, said: "There needs to be an inquiry into what happened here, it is horrifying. I'm really concerned that Irene may not come back out of hospital after something like this. She was already very frail and ill." Officers had been given consent to carry out the search when she was injured, Cleveland Police said.
