UN school in Gaza hit by shelling for second time

A United Nations school sheltering people who have fled Israeli airstrikes in Gaza has been hit by shelling from Israeli shelling, the UN said.

Fighting has now been raging for 16 days and has left more than 650 dead.

Israel 'prepared to widen offensive significantly'

Israel is preparing to step up its Gaza offensive, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said after ground troops were sent into the Palestinian enclave.

"My instructions ... are to prepare for the possibility of significantly widening the ground operation, and the military is preparing accordingly," he told reporters before convening a meeting of cabinet ministers to discuss the operation.
