Palestinian officials said 65 Palestinians had been killed since Israel launched a ground offensive on Thursday, pushing the death toll past 300.

Mr Ban's visit would attempt to help both sides "end the violence and find a way forward", UN political affairs chief Jeffrey Feltman said.

He added that the UN was "alarmed by Israel's heavy response" to "indiscriminate" rocket fire from Gaza.
