President Barack Obama has urged Russia to use its influence on separatists in eastern Ukraine to allow international investigators access to the MH17 crash site.
Speaking to the media outside the White House, President Obama said that President Putin has "direct responsibility" to compel separatists to co-operate with the international investigation into the incident.
Mr Obama also said that the burden is now on Russia to insist that separatists stop tampering with the investigation and that "now is the time" for President Putin to pivot away from his strategy he has taken in Ukraine.
Thousands of online users have taken to social media to call for the victims of the Malaysian airliner crash to be returned to loved ones.
United States intelligence officials admitted that they do not know who fired the surface-to-air missile that downed flight MH17.
