Foreign ministers push for a longer Gaza ceasefire

The group of foreign ministers who have been discussing how to end violence in Gaza are determined to get an extension to the 12-hour truce in fighting.

We all agreed that there must be an extension of that ceasefire.

The humanitarian situation demands it - everyone wants to see an end to the loss of life, so we're focusing our attention now on achieving an extension of the ceasefire that is in force at the moment.

But we have to go beyond that, we have to look for a sustainable, enduring ceasefire and beyond that meaningful negotiations about the underlying grievances that have caused this repeat cycle of violence in Gaza.
