Gatwick apologises after staff shortage causes baggage chaos

Gatwick Airport has apologised after a staff shortage forced hundreds of passengers to go home without their luggage and left others waiting for up to five hours to reclaim their bags.

Many travellers took to social media to vent their frustrations at the disruption.

Officials at Gatwick said passengers will be reunited with their luggage within 48 hours as baggage reclaim at the airport returned to normal.

Staffing issues with baggage handlers causing delays

A lack of staff at baggage handlers Swissport is causing severe delays for passengers at Gatwick, the airport has said.

Many have complained of long waits delays while attempting to collect their luggage.

"Due to resourcing issues with the baggage handlers Swissport overnight, there have been issues and delays with passengers' luggage.

Gatwick has provided extra staff to help the airlines and their baggage handlers improve their service, as well as providing welfare and water for passengers waiting in the baggage areas, but we are sorry for the delays they have faced.
