The 34-year-old whose team narrowly missed out on a gold medal when they lost to Australia on penalties has returned from four successive Commonwealths with a medal.

She was selected for the role in a vote by her fellow competitors.

She said: "It is such an honour, I think particularly because the whole of team England has performed so well. It just adds that extra bit of pride to be carrying the flag at the closing ceremony.

She added:" I am just so excited. I am just hoping I don't trip over, to be honest."
