Lights Out as Britain commemorates WW1

Britain's most famous landmarks including the London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Downing Street and Gateshead's Millennium Bridge were plunged into darkness for an hour last night to mark the moment Britain first declared war on Germany in 1914.

Iconic image shows Hitler in crowd as WW1 announced

This archive image shows Adolf Hitler in the crowd hearing the announcement of the First World War on August 2, 1914.

After Nazi Germany became a reality, Hitler mentioned that he had been outside Field Marshals' Hall in Munich when the declaration of war was revealed.

A German photographer then went through his old pictures of the event and found the image.

Hitler was 25 years old when the First World War broke out. He enlisted in the Bavarian army and rose to the rank of lance corporal, but no further.
