Britain's most famous landmarks including the London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Downing Street and Gateshead's Millennium Bridge were plunged into darkness for an hour last night to mark the moment Britain first declared war on Germany in 1914.

Miliband 'not given opportunity' to write wreath note

Labour has responded to criticism that Ed Miliband did not write a personal message on a wreath laid at a First World War commemorative event.

The message left on the wreath states, "From the Leader of the Opposition".
