Actor Robin Williams hanged himself, a post mortem has revealed.

Keith Boyd from the Marin County Sheriff's Office said the Mrs Doubtfire star's lifeless body was found in a bedroom at his California home on Monday.

The emergency services arrived at 12pm and Mr Williams was pronounced dead two minutes later.

The last time he was seen alive was by his wife at 10.30pm on Sunday. The next morning she left the house at around 10.30am believing he was still asleep.

But Williams' body was discovered by his personal assistant when she became concerned he did not answer to her knocking at 11.45am yesterday.

Mr Boyd told a press conference: "Preliminary information reveals Mr Williams had been seeking treatment for depression.

"Our indication at this time is that it is a suicide due to asphyxia due to hanging."

Further toxicology tests to see if Mr Williams was under the influence of any drugs or alcohol will now be carried out, the results of which could take up to six weeks to come back.
