A polar bear believed to be the last of its kind in Africa died in a South African zoo yesterday, months after his long-term mate passed away.

"Africa's last polar bear Wang had to be put down due to liver and heart failure" Johnnesburg Zoo said in a statement to Agence France Presse,

The 30-year-old bear arrived in South Africa from China and was diagnosed with liver trouble four years ago.

Wang had also been pining the loss of his partner of 27 years, GeeBee, the zoo also said.

Johannesburg Zoo has not decided to replace the pair - who are more suited to colder climates - and who had never produced cubs.
