Samantha MacArthur, 50, told the Daily Mailshe has no idea why her family were targeted in the attack that nearly cost her husband Paul Kohler an eye.

Mr Kohler, 55, who is head of law at the School of Oriental and African Studies, needed reconstructive surgery after the gang of four burst into the house in Wimbledon, south-west London, and demanded money.

Police released a picture of Mr Kohler's shocking injuries and two men have been charged over the incident, while two more remain at large.

Ms MacArthur said: "I heard Paul answer the door and shout something like, 'What?' and then I heard him shout, 'Sam, help, help'. I raced on to the landing but as I did so, two men came up the stairs with their faces covered. I don't remember screaming, although (daughter) Eloise says I did.

I can't get the picture of him after the attack out of my head. He was all covered in blood. Paul has been immensely brave but of course he's shaken up and shocked by what's happened.
