A black man who "brandished a knife" has been fatally shot by police a few miles from Ferguson, where unarmed teenager Michael Brown was shot dead, NBC News reported, citing authorities.

St Louis police said the 23-year-old man had taken an energy drink and pastries from a local store before the altercation with two officers.

St Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said the man, who has yet to be named, was repeatedly ordered to drop the knife before he told the officers, "Shoot me now, kill me now."
