US intelligence community have been working to verify the authenticity of a video purportedly showing the killing of a US journalist by Islamic State, according to the White House.
Reuters reported the White House saying that the US would be appalled if the video is genuine. National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said:
We have seen a video that purports to be the murder of U.S. citizen James Foley by ISIL.
The intelligence community is working as quickly as possible to determine its authenticity. If genuine, we are appalled by the brutal murder of an innocent American journalist and we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends. We will provide more information when it is available.
A British family have told ITV News of their devastation after discovering a close relative is fighting with the Islamic State in Iraq.
A French journalist who was held hostage with James Foley in Syria has told ITV News it was "devastating" to see his murder.
