The Volkskrant story - headlined "Johan Cruyff deceased" - was supposed to be part of an internal test for a new app, but it appeared on the site by mistake.

Screenshots of the error quickly spread across social media, prompting an apology from the paper's editor who called it a "stupid mistake".

"On behalf of Volkskrant I offer my apologies to Johan Cruyff and anyone who has been upset by this," Philippe Remarque said.
