The US government decided to reveal the failed attempt to rescue James Foley and his fellow hostages in Syria as "several news outlets" were aware of the operation, Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said.
Hagel told a news conference, "The underlying objective, as the President has said, was to rescue these hostages knowing that their lives were in danger ... it's the responsibility of our government and our leaders to do all we can to take action."
We'll do everything that we need to do, that the American people would expect from their leaders to continue to do everything we can to get our hostages back.
