British Islamic State fighters 'want to come home'

British extremists fighting for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria want to come back to the UK but fear they will be jailed, a leading radicalisation professor said.

A jihadist contacted researchers at King's College London through social media to say there is a growing feeling of disillusionment amongst fighters.

He said many fighters were afraid of going to prison if they returned to the UK.

British IS fighter: Jihad is not we thought it would be

A British man fighting for the Islamic State told researchers many UK citizens want to return because "they found out jihad is not what they thought".

The man told researchers at King's College London that "Muslims are fighting Muslims" and he "didn't come for that".

You know, the truth is many people left to help the Syrian people, then we got labelled as terrorists, now people want to come back, not to attack but because they found out jihad is not what they thought.

We all saw videos of dawlah and they hyped us up. We saw the suffering of the Syrians. But right now Muslims are fighting Muslims. Assad’s forgotten about. The whole jihad was turned upside down.

Muslims are fighting Muslims, I didn’t come for that.

– British jihadist
