England captain Alastair Cook led his side's rearguard on day three of the second Investec Ashes Test, as Australia managed a single wicket in the morning session.

Cook shared a 145-run fifth-wicket stand with Ben Stokes, who struck a lively 87, as England reached lunch at 181 for five.

Cook was more reserved but batted out the session on his way to 56 in 167 balls, as well as surviving a nasty Mitchell Johnson blow on the elbow in the closing minutes.

The match position still favoured the tourists, who were ahead by 385 runs and still looking at a possible follow-on.
