A Belgian diplomat has been confirmed as among those killed in the Mali attack.
A statement on the Belgian government website confirmed Geoffrey Dieudonné, first counselor in the leadership of the administration of Parliament, had been in Bamako, Mali.
A statement on the government website said: "At that time, the precise circumstances of his tragic death are not yet known.
"Parliament expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr Dieudonné"
A hotel in Mali's capital was targeted by gunmen in an attack which killed 27 and saw 170 people held hostage for several hours.
Bamako is two and half thousand miles from Paris; but in another capital, the same nightmare has unfolded.
