A spectator died during the Dakar Rally on Saturday after being hit by a Mitsubishi car taking part in the race.

The 63-year-old Bolivian man was hit by Frenchman Lionel Baud's vehicle during the seventh stage, from Bolivia to Argentina.

"The organisation's medical service could only confirm, unfortunately, the death of the person involved," organisers said in a statement.

The death was the 64th in the history of the annual endurance race since 1979, including 23 competitors.
