Man remanded over 'attempted axe murder' of Pc

A man accused of the attempted murder of a female police officer using an axe was remanded in custody on Friday.

The officer suffered multiple serious injuries, while her male colleague was also hurt during the incident in Gleadless, Sheffield, on Wednesday evening.

Lisa Bates and her partner had been responding to a domestic incident at around 7.50pm, where a man was reportedly armed with an axe.

Pc Bates lost a finger during the attack and also suffered a fractured skull and broken leg.

Nathan Sumner, 35, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with a string of offences, including attempted murder.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on May 13.
