Countdown on to McGregor v Mayweather

The final countdown is on to the fight the world is talking about, with Dublin MMA star Conor McGregor set to face boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas.

It may be billed by many as a mis-match, but money is the driving force behind the showpiece bout.

Four years ago, McGregor was picking up €200 a week in dole cheques.

On Saturday night, he stands to make at least $75m from his first ever professional boxing match.

McGregor may be the king of UFC, but it is 40-year-old Mayweather who is expected to triumph and surpass the great Rocky Marciano’s record by going 50 fights undefeated.

If he wins the 16th belt of his career, it will certainly be the most extravagant one as the specially made WBC belt has been encrusted with over 3,500 diamonds.

“What ifs” have dominated conversations around the globe, with the younger McGregor certainly tipping himself to stage an upset over his veteran opponent.

But then no one has ever accused him of lacking confidence …
