Two pipe bombs have been found during a security alert in Londonderry.

The Rossdowney Road was closed around 1.30pm on Monday, following a report of a suspicious object.

Police say the pipe bombs were taken away for forensic examinations.

Inspector Jonny Hunter said: "An operation was put into place to ensure the safety of residents. The safety of the community is of paramount importance.

"I am aware how frustrating it has been for those who have had their lives disrupted and thank the community for their patience."

He appealed for anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the area to contact police.

The road was closed during the alert but has since been reopened.
