Swansea Council says eight hundred people have applied for just 12 apprenticeships to work for the local authority. The trainees will be given core skills in construction.

It comes as a think tank says 7,000 more people in Wales are expected to be out of work by the end of the summer.

The survey, by think tank the Institute for Public Policy Research, also found that 41,000 extra under 25-year-olds in the UK will be out of work - a new record.
