In the wake of what he's already called 'a tough election,' the leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Assembly, Andrew RT Davies has written to all Conservative Assembly Members and those who work for the party. The email has been leaked to me and I've reproduced it in full below.
To: All Conservative Party - Members; All Conservative Party - Support Staff
Subject: Re: Thank you
Firstly, I would like to thank everyone in the group for all of the time and energy that you have offered to councillors and candidates during the campaign. In particular, I would like to give special thanks to Janet for the excellent work she did in her role as Local Government spokesperson.
The results last night will not have been easy to take and, sadly, we will all have lost many friends and colleagues who have served their communities with unstinting commitment. Unfortunately there will also be many new candidates who fought tirelessly and with positivity, but who find themselves victims of a UK-wide national swing.
Whilst there are few positives to take at this moment, I have no doubt that we will still play an active role in several councils across Wales. We have also achieved the second highest return of councillors since the local government reorganisation of the mid-90s.
Last night does not appear to have been any kinder to the Liberals and Plaid, both of whom were wiped out in many parts of Wales having lost control of all of the councils that they previously led. We have also gained a number of new council seats from both parties.
In many parts of Wales we remain the only alternative to Welsh Labour and it is more important than ever that we redouble our efforts, both here in the Assembly and out in local communities across the country. We must continue to hold the Welsh Government to account and, above all, develop and communicate a clear and concise Welsh Conservative message.
Finally, if I could once again offer my sincere thanks to you all. Whilst the result was disappointing we can all be proud of the contribution that the Assembly group has made to the campaign.
Andrew RT Davies
