A soldier from Cwmbran has been repatriated.

Corporal Michael Thacker of the 1st Battalion the Royal Welsh was killed in Afghanistan on Friday 1st July.

Today his body, along with that of his fellow soldier Private Gregg Thomas Stone, has been brought back to RAF Brize Norton.

The 27-year-old was on duty within an observation post in Helmand Province when he was shot and fatally wounded.

His friends and family lined the route.

He leaves behind a wife, Catherine, and two-year-old daughter Millie.

Michael was the love of my life. He was an amazing husband and father who will always be remembered as a funny, loving and kind man. Everyone who met Mike instantly liked him and through time came to love him.
