Olympic cyclist Geraint Thomas is hoping for the first Welsh gold at this year's London Games.

He rides later this evening in the semi final , and if he qualifies, final, of the men's team pursuit.

The signs are good for the Cardiff rider, who chose to miss out on aplace at this year's marquee stage race the Tour de France in favour of focussing on his Olympic ambitions.

That decision seems to have paid dividends as his quartet, including Ed Clancy, Peter Kennaugh and Steven Burke, announced themselves onto the newly built velodrome at the Olympic Park with a world record time of 3 mins 52:499.

That time bettered the previous best the same squad set on their way to winning World Championship gold in Melbourne earlier this year.
