Top 10 tips to save energy

SSE announced prices will rise from November 15 Photo: PA

Energy company SSE, which owns supplier SWALEC, announced today that household electricity and gas prices would increase by an average of 8.2% from November 15.

To help get you thinking about saving money, we've put together a list of 10 energy saving tips:

  • Turn the thermostat on your central heating down by 1 degree
  • Wrap up in cosy jumpers instead of turning to the central heating
  • Turn off your lights in rooms you're not using - and replace bulbs with energy saving ones
  • Unplug any appliances and chargers that you're not using
  • Turn the pressure down on your shower, or get an eco shower head to save water
  • Invest in draught-proofing products or a draught excluder for your doors to keep the heat in
  • Wash your clothes at 30 degrees, and air dry your laundry when you can instead of using the tumble dryer
  • Get your boiler checked regularly to make sure it's as efficient as possible
  • Don't over fill your kettle
  • Make sure your radiators or heaters aren't blocked by furniture or covered by curtains - if they are, you aren't getting the most out of them
