Tonight’s Wales This Week, 8pm on ITV Cymru Wales, tells the story of an inspirational woman from Swansea who has triumphed over multiple tragedies. At fifteen Melanie Davies became paraplegic after falling off a motorbike.
That was in 1980. The bad luck didn’t end there. She’s since broken her legs and has had breast cancer twice.
Melanie Davies has published her life story and now a film is in the pipeline.
And what she’s planning is a unique rehabilitation centre in Wales.
For 14 years, Melanie and her husband Mike have been campaigning to raise funds to build a state of the art rehab centre on the site of Morriston Hospital in Swansea. They set up a charity Treat Trust Wales, to provide physical and emotional support for people who have suffered all kinds of trauma, accident or life changing illness. Every eight hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury.
