Bala's giant Welsh cake sets a Guinness World Record

Guinness World Records have confirmed that a world record attempt in Bala, Gwynedd to bake the world's largest Welsh cake was successful.

The record attempt was made on St David's Day by a team from the town, with hundreds of spectators attending.

The finished cake weighed 21.5kg and measured 1.5m in diameter.

The cake was divided into more than 200 pieces. They were then sold for charity and raised £800.

There were some tense moments as the team mixed the ingredients, rolled the cake to the correct depth and cooked it over hot charcoal.

Cheers rang out when the cake was successfully flipped, the steel sheet removed and the smell of freshly baked Welsh cake filled the air.
