New cancer drug could extend lives of patients

Researchers at Cardiff University have unveiled a new drug that's extending the lifetimes of some cancer patients.

The medicine was presented to the world's top cancer specialists at a conference in Chicago.

Clinical trials showed the drug - called "Acelarin" shrank tumours in half the patients who took it.

Richard Morgan reports:

"In about half of the patients that received the drug, the cancer stopped growing or it shrunk.

In some cases the cancer shrunk by as much as forty per cent.

And in this group of patients, that have exhausted all other possibilities and have no drugs left, that's a major achievement."
