The Welsh Government invested £88 million into the new unit to provide modern, state of the art facilities for people experiencing mental health illnesses. Hafan y Coed, which means woodland haven in Welsh, will be replacing the services currently provided in the outdated 108 year old Whitchurch Hospital and the Llanfair Unit.

The key to the success of this unit is allowing service users to have a degree of independence, despite them being in a hospital environment which is reflected in the individual bedrooms, ensuite facilities and outside spaces.

A key aspect in the design of the building has been using new technology, which not only increases safety for staff and guests, but will also mean privacy for service users during their stay.
