A packaging firm in Newport has announced plans to close one of its sites, putting around 150 jobs at risk.

Essentra, which produces folding cartons for the consumer goods industry, said the site is operating at a loss and it could not see things improving.

For the six months ended 30 June 2017, the facility generated an operating loss of £3.4m on revenue of £6.1m and is not anticipated to make a realistic improvement to profitability in the near, or even long, term.

It is currently consulting on plans to cease production at its Newport carton firm, which could see the site close by the end of this year.

The company has received thousands of pounds in Welsh Government funding in recent years.

Today the Welsh Government said it was "deeply disappointed" by the announcement.

This will be a worrying time for workers and their families and we will be working closely with the company and others to ensure employees are fully supported throughout this difficult period.
