A 24-year-old man has died after he was assaulted outside a hospital.

South Wales Police is now appealing for witnesses following the incident at Maesteg Community Hospital car park at around 6.15pm on Wednesday, August 30th.

Gavin Rees was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, with serious injuries but died yesterday (September 20th).

Detective Inspector Dean Llewellyn of South Wales Police Major Crime Investigations Team said:

Gavin Rees sadly passed away at the University Hospital of Wales late on Wednesday night, having never recovered from the injuries sustained during the assault. Mr Rees’ family are being supported by trained Family Liaison Officers.

We believe there may be some people who saw what happened on the evening of Wednesday, August 30th, but who have not yet provided a statement to the police. I cannot stress how vitally important it is that they do the right thing and come forward to tell us what they saw.

– South Wales Police, DI Llewellyn

A 44-year-old man from Llanharry, who was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent following the incident, remains on police bail while further enquiries are carried out.
