A coastguard rescue team brought a pregnant woman to safety after she went into labour early, yesterday evening.

Aberdyfi Coastguard Rescue Team said they were paged to create a helicopter landing site in Tywyn.

They transferred the pregnant woman to the specialist neonatal unit at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd Hospital in Rhyl, more than 60 miles away.

Coastguards said they battled "hammering rain and massive waves" caused by Storm Eleanor.

They said the conditions were "appalling".

Despite this, Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 936 travelled from its base in Caernarfon and was able to make the trip safely.

It then flew the woman and her midwife to hospital.
