It's thought he took his own life.

Jack Sargeant paid tribute to his father in his first speech in the Senedd.

It is customary of course, in your first statement to pay tribute to your predecessor, not often though, are they in the circumstances I find myself in today.

Not only am I paying tribute to someone who loved his constituency and loved Wales and fought tirelessly across his constituency and across Wales for those who are less able to stand up for themselves. But I am also paying tribute to the man I knew as Dad.

The man I loved going for a pint with, the man who helped me with my exams, the man who stood by my side right the way through life and stood so proud when I graduated.

In the speech he also said he would oversee inquiries into the handling of allegations of innapropriate conduct against the former Cabinet Member for Communities.

Carl Sargeant was sacked by the First Minister days before his death.

Alongside my political work in this chamber, I will also be working to ensure that the inquiries under way will examine the way in which my dad was treated in the run-up to his death.

AMs in the chamber applauded Mr Sargeant at the beginning and gave him a standing ovation at the end of his speech.
