Members of a Newport church destroyed by a fire have held an improvised service in a nearby car park.

More than 200 people attended the service after Bethel Community Church on Stow Hill was gutted by the blaze which spread from a derelict nightclub on Friday night.

A 43-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman from Newport have been arrested and remain in police custody at this time.

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen people inside the old Zanzibar nightclub building adjacent to the Church.

The Church's Pastor, Andrew Cleverly said “Our building may be gone, but the Church is alive.”

"We've been overwhelmed with the support and love and the encouragement that we've had, not just in Wales but around the world and we are very very grateful."
