Tributes have been paid to a 39-year-old Welsh man who was killed in a suspected deliberate hit-and-run in Cyprus.

Charlie Birch, from Powys, was struck by a car just hours after stepping in to stop a woman being assaulted in a local bar. He was walking along a road near Paphos with 32-year-old Will Pritchard at about 2.30am.

Cyprus Police said Charlie died at the scene while Will was injured and taken to hospital in Paphos with non life-threatening injuries.

Charlie's family, who were also in Cyprus, have spoken of their devastation.

He was one of a kind, loved his family so much and he was an amazing dad to his two girls and a loyal friend to so many people. He would do anything for anyone, he had a big heart. He was who we called if we wanted anything, we love him so much. A massive hole had been left, just want him back. I don’t know what his girls are going to do without him, they were his world.

– Belinda Birch, Charlie's sister

It is an absolutely horrendous experience. Charlie has two little girls. The family are trying to fly home as soon as they can.

– Adrian Bowen, Charlie's brother-in-law
