The significant challenges being faced by all public service areas in Wales are well documented, and the WLGA welcomes the forthcoming debate that will be inspired by the development of the new Commission.
The WLGA will await further detail on the remit of the Commission but would expect all parts of Wales’ public services to be subject to examination, including the setting of strategic policy at a national level.
The severe financial climate, high levels of public demand and the significant demographic changes taking place within the Welsh populace are all placing a huge amount of pressure on Wales’ public services.
It is right, and timely, that we now seek to explore the most effective ways of maintaining, protecting and improving these services into the future.
A review into public service delivery has been expected for some time and has indeed been championed by a number of senior local government figures in Wales. The WLGA will look forward to playing a full and positive role in this.

I am establishing a Commission on Public Service Governance and Delivery and I ampleased to announce that Sir Paul Williams has agreed to chair this Commission. Nick Bennett, Nick Bourne, Nerys Evans, Juliet Luporini, Garry Owen and Cllr Alun Thomas have agreed to serve as members ofthe Commission.
Since public sector budgets are likely to continue to tighten, and demand pressures grow, there is a clear need to examine how services can be sustained and standards of performance raised, so that people in Wales can continue to receive and influence the public services they need and value.
The establishment of this Commission on Public Service Governance and Delivery provides an opportunity for those who are involved in delivering services, those who are politically accountable for them and users of them to examine how public services are governed: that is, held accountable for their performance and delivered most effectively to the public.
